Thiruvananthapuram: Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan on Sunday inaugurated the Aranmula Uthrittathi Vallamkali on the Pamba river, describing the traditional boat race as a vibrant symbol of Kerala’s cultural heritage, devotion and spirit of togetherness.
Congratulating the people of Kerala on the state’s recent renaming, Radhakrishnan also extended his greetings on the occasion of Onam. He recalled his role as Rajya Sabha chairman in presiding over the passage of the State Renaming Bill during the recently concluded session.

Radhakrishnan said the Aranmula Vallamkali, closely associated with Onam and the sacred Vallasadya tradition, showcases teamwork, discipline and sportsmanship. More than 100 oarsmen row the decorated Palliyodams in perfect rhythm, he noted.
Highlighting the spiritual significance of the Pamba river, he said it is closely linked to the Sabarimala pilgrimage and represents faith, purification and spiritual surrender. Recalling his seven visits to Sabarimala, the Vice-President said his first pilgrimage, shortly before he became a Member of Parliament, remained particularly significant to him.
He also highlighted the heritage of the Sree Parthasarathy Temple and the GI-tagged Aranmula Kannadi, stressing the need to preserve traditional arts, crafts and indigenous knowledge systems for future generations.
Observing that even people living abroad return to participate in cherished traditions, Radhakrishnan said Aranmula demonstrates the enduring connection between people and their cultural roots.
Emphasising that development and heritage can progress together, he invoked Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Vikas Bhi, Virasat Bhi”.
“Our diversity is not a source of division; it is a source of our strength,” he said, underlining India’s cultural unity through its diverse festivals and traditions.
The programme was attended by Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, Home Affairs Minister Ramesh Chennithala, Higher Education Minister Roji M. John, Water Resources Minister Mons Joseph, MP Anto Antony, Aranmula MLA Abhin Varkey and other dignitaries.
