Patna HC advocates protest over voter ‘deletions’, demand Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation

Patna, Oct 14 (IANS) Advocates at the Patna High Court staged a protest against alleged irregularities in the electoral roll revision process, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and condemning the police action against lawyers protesting in Delhi.

The demonstration was organised by the Indian Association of Lawyers (IAL), Patna High Court, at Gate No. 4 of the court premises on Wednesday.

Participants raised slogans and called for accountability over the alleged deletion of voters’ names during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

Addressing the protesters, senior Patna High Court advocate Yogesh Chandra Verma described the police action against advocates participating in a peaceful protest in Delhi as highly condemnable.

He said peaceful demonstrations were a democratic right and that detaining protesters amounted to the suppression of those rights.

“The Bihar Bar Council strongly condemns this incident, and the entire legal community registers its protest against this action,” Verma said.

The protesters also questioned the reported deletion of the names of more than 13 crore citizens during the SIR process.

They asked why names removed during the revision were now reportedly being restored to electoral rolls and called for a clear explanation from the Election Commission of India and three election commissioners.

They also demanded that the three election commissioners, including Gyanesh Kumar, should do the press conference and respond to the questions that arose after the news report published in September.

The advocates demanded transparency in the process of deleting and subsequently restoring voters’ names, along with accountability for the decisions taken during the revision exercise.

Senior advocates Yogesh Chandra Verma, Ramjeevan Babu and Uday Pratap Singh, along with other members of the legal fraternity, participated in the demonstration.

The protesters reiterated their demand for the Chief Election Commissioner’s resignation and called for greater transparency in the management of electoral rolls.
