CHENNAI: Chennai police have arrested granite businessman and Gem Group chairman R Veeramani and a couple in connection with allegations of sexual abuse involving several minor girls.
Veeramani’s associate Shanthi and her husband Mahendra Singhan were also arrested. Police said the three have been remanded in judicial custody.
The case dates back to October 2025, when a social activist submitted a pen drive to the anti-vice squad on October 6, alleging that it contained footage showing the sexual abuse of a minor girl. After examining the material, police registered a case on October 7 and launched an investigation.
During the probe, police identified the man in the footage as Veeramani, officials said. Investigators also found that a house rented by Veeramani in Teynampet was allegedly managed by Shanthi and Mahendra. Police suspect that several minor girls were brought to the premises, where the alleged abuse took place.
Investigators subsequently recovered another video and other material as part of the probe. Searches at the accused persons’ residences and offices reportedly yielded photographs of girls and women and other documents, police said.
Shanthi and Mahendra have been accused of allegedly facilitating the offences and helping conceal the activities, according to investigators.
The arrests have come nearly a year after the case was registered in October 2025. Police have not yet clarified the reason for the delay in arresting the accused.
The allegations are part of an ongoing investigation, and the accused are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
