Bengaluru: Karnataka is considering approaching the Supreme Court against the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee’s (CWRC) direction to release around 1 TMC of water daily to Tamil Nadu, agriculture minister N Cheluvarayaswamy said on Tuesday.
Speaking to reporters at Vidhana Soudha, Cheluvarayaswamy said the state had already faced difficulties in releasing 3,500 cusecs to Tamil Nadu last month.
He said increased rainfall had helped, with substantial inflows into the Kabini reservoir. However, if rainfall declines and reservoir inflows reduce, maintaining the required release to Tamil Nadu could become difficult, he said.
“CWMA is also likely to issue an order along the lines of the CWRC recommendation. Therefore, the government is considering approaching the Supreme Court,” Cheluvarayaswamy said.
A meeting involving Chief Minister and Water Resources Minister is scheduled to discuss the issue. The minister said no immediate decision would be taken and that the government would consult officials from the Water Resources Department and its legal team before deciding on the next course of action.
