Guntur: A four-lane Road Over Bridge (ROB) connecting Guntur and Nambur railway stations will be constructed at an estimated cost of ₹108 crore, with the project aimed at improving road connectivity and eliminating a busy level crossing.
Union Minister of State for Railways and Jal Shakti V. Somanna, along with Union Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications Dr Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, laid the foundation stone for the project on Saturday.
The 668-metre ROB will replace Level Crossing Gate No. 3 on the Guntur-Krishna Canal section of the Guntur-Nambur railway line. Located near Guntur’s Inner Ring Road, the bridge will provide a direct connection between Bus Stand Road and Gorantla village.
The project will require around 2.9 acres of land and is expected to begin shortly. The entire cost of construction will be borne by the Ministry of Railways.
Focus on safety, smoother traffic
Speaking at the event, Somanna said passenger safety and operational efficiency remain key priorities for Indian Railways. He said replacing level crossings with ROBs and underbridges would help reduce traffic disruptions, improve train punctuality and strengthen road safety.
The new bridge is also expected to reduce waiting time for motorists, save fuel and ease traffic movement in the Guntur area.
Somanna said railway infrastructure across Andhra Pradesh was being upgraded, adding that 74 railway stations in the state are also being modernised with an investment of around ₹3,500 crore.
Dr Pemmasani said coordination between Central and state agencies was helping accelerate major road and rail infrastructure projects in the Guntur region.
The event was attended by railway officials, elected representatives and local residents.
