Chennai, Aug 25 (IANS) The Tamil Nadu government will launch the Enterprise TN Plan to promote products from five major manufacturing sectors in global markets, Minister for Industries and Investment Promotion, S Keerthana, has announced.
The initiative will focus on textiles, leather, fireworks, automobile components and jewellery. It is expected to strengthen the international presence of Tamil Nadu-made products and help local manufacturers gain access to new overseas markets.
Proposed in the Industries Department’s Policy Note for 2026-27, the plan seeks to leverage the State’s memoranda of understanding with multinational companies and the market opportunities available under India’s 14 Free Trade Agreements. The government believes these arrangements can help Tamil Nadu businesses integrate more effectively with global supply chains.
Enterprise TN builds on the Tamil Nadu Export Promotion Strategy unveiled in 2021 by the previous DMK government. Textiles, leather and automobile components were among the priority sectors identified under that strategy and have been retained in the new plan. Fireworks and jewellery, however, are new additions, reflecting the government’s intention to provide greater international exposure to industries with strong production bases in the State.
Sivakasi is a major centre for fireworks manufacturing, while several Tamil Nadu cities have established jewellery production and export clusters. Food processing, electronics and machinery, which were included among the six priority sectors in the 2021 strategy, have not found a place in the five sectors specifically identified under Enterprise TN.
The policy note, however, indicates that the State will continue to support emerging industries through broader investment-promotion programmes. Tamil Nadu already occupies a leading position in several manufacturing categories. It ranks first or second nationally in eight major segments.
The State accounts for 33.64 per cent of India’s wearing-apparel production and 25.18 per cent of leather and related products, ranking first in both categories. It ranks second in textiles, contributing 19 per cent of national output, and in computer, electronic and optical products, with a share of 28.84 per cent.
The new export initiative forms part of Tamil Nadu’s wider strategy to expand its global economic footprint and achieve its target of becoming a $1.5 trillion economy by 2036. The government also plans to attract investments and improve market access through international investor summits, overseas roadshows and focused engagement with individual industries.
