Tamil Nadu bans 23 ‘dangerous’ dog breeds

Chennai: Following a distressing incident where a Rottweiler dog attacked a five-year-old girl in Chennai, the Tamil Nadu Animal Husbandry Department has taken decisive action by banning the import, breeding, or sale of 23 breeds of dogs deemed “dangerous” for people.

As per the department’s statement, the prohibited breeds include Tosa Inu, Fila Brasileiro, American Bulldog, Caucasian Shepherd, Kangal Shepherd Dog, Terriers, Mastiffs, Tornjak, Cane Corso, Wolf Dogs, Akbash, Pitbull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Dogo Argentino, Boerboel, Central Asian Shepherd Dog, South Russian Shepherd Dog, Japanese Tosa, Akita, Rottweiler, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Canaria, Moscow Guard, and Bandog.

The directive mandates immediate sterilization surgery for dogs on the list to prevent further reproduction.

Furthermore, the Union Animal Husbandry Department has previously advocated for bans on several dog breeds, including Rottweilers, Pitbulls, and American Bulldogs, citing their potential danger. It has instructed state governments and Union Territories to refrain from issuing licenses for the sale, breeding, and ownership of such dogs, prioritizing public safety.
