Chennai: Renowned Tamil actor and former leader of the opposition in the Tamil Nadu assembly, ‘Captain’ Vijayakanth, breathed his last on Thursday at a private hospital in Chennai. The 71-year-old, fondly known as the “Captain” for his portrayal of military characters, succumbed to pneumonia and COVID-19 complications while on ventilator support at Miot Hospital.
Hospital officials confirmed his demise, stating, “Captain Vijayakanth was on ventilator support following his admission for pneumonia. Despite the best efforts of the medical staff, he passed away in the morning on Dec 28.”
In 2005, Vijayakanth founded the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), challenging the political dominance of former Chief Ministers J. Jayalalithaa and M. Karunanidhi. A multifaceted personality, he excelled as an actor, producer, and director while serving as the Leader of the Opposition twice, representing the constituencies of Virudhachalam and Rishivandiyam. He is survived by his wife, Premalatha, and two sons.
Known as “Puratchi Kalaignar,” meaning revolutionary artist, Vijayakanth made his acting debut in 1979 with ‘Inikkum Ilamai,’ evolving from a villain to an iconic action hero in the 1980s and 1990s. His blockbuster film ‘Sattam Oru Iruttarai’ was remade in several languages, solidifying his pan-Indian appeal. With 154 movie appearances, he held a special place in the hearts of Tamil cinema enthusiasts.
Vijayakanth’s political journey was marked by his refusal to accept donations for his party, and he earned a special reference from Prime Minister Modi, who considered him a friend. However, he faced criticism for making objectionable gestures in public, particularly towards journalists. The passing of ‘Captain’ Vijayakanth leaves a significant void in both the cinematic and political realms of Tamil Nadu.
