Amritsar, Sep 18 (IANS) Punjab Police’s Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Harjeet Singh was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Amritsar on Friday, while he was on duty, prompting the Punjab Police to launch a detailed investigation into the incident.
Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav visited the crime scene and reviewed the progress of the investigation. He also met the family of the deceased police officer and expressed his condolences.
Speaking to the media, the DGP said that exemplary action would be taken against those responsible for the killing.
According to the preliminary investigation, ASI Harjeet Singh had left Gate Hakiman police station at around 9.30 p.m. for duty at Dana Mandi. The incident reportedly took place at around 12:30 a.m.
Initial findings suggest that the assailants followed the ASI on a two-wheeler before approaching him at close range. They opened fire using a .30-bore pistol, with a bullet striking the back of his head or neck.
Police recovered an empty .30-bore cartridge case and blood stains from the spot. The evidence has been collected for forensic examination. The exact cause and circumstances of death will be confirmed following the post-mortem examination.
After reaching the spot, DGP Yadav personally reviewed the crime scene and assessed the technical aspects of the investigation. He said police teams were examining CCTV footage from the area and analysing movement trails to identify and trace the assailants.
Several special teams have been constituted to investigate the case and apprehend those involved in the killing. Police are also examining forensic evidence and other technical inputs to establish the sequence of events and identify the perpetrators.
The DGP said the investigation was being conducted with professional competence and through detailed technical analysis. He assured the victim’s family that the police would make every effort to identify and arrest those responsible.
Yadav said the police were working to achieve a breakthrough in the case at the earliest and assured that strict legal action would be taken against the accused.
“Exemplary action will be taken against the culprits,” the DGP said.
Earlier in the day, DGP Punjab Police also posted on social media ‘X’ and said, “Our brave police officer, ASI Harjit Singh of district #Amritsar, has laid down his life in the line of duty. Punjab Police stands firmly with the bereaved family in their hour of grief.
