Kashmir Gripped by Intense Cold Wave as Minimum Temperatures Plunge Below Zero

Srinagar: Kashmir experienced an intense cold wave on Monday, with the minimum temperature remaining several notches below freezing, according to a statement from the Meteorological (MeT) department.

The statement reported that the minimum temperature was minus 2.3 degrees Celsius in Srinagar city, while Gulmarg and Pahalgam recorded temperatures of minus 2.6 and minus 4.3, respectively. In the Ladakh region, Leh town had a minimum temperature of minus 6.7, and Kargil recorded minus 8.1 as the lowest temperature of the night.

Jammu city registered a comparatively milder temperature of 7.3, while Katra had 8.1, Batote 5.9, Bhaderwah 2.4, and Banihal 6.2 as their respective minimum temperatures.

The harsh winter cold, locally known as ‘Chillai Kalan,’ has commenced its 40-day duration on December 21 and is slated to persist until January 30. As the region continues to grapple with sub-zero temperatures, residents are bracing themselves for the chill that characterizes this significant winter period.
