Kolkata, March 11 (IANS) The Kolkata Police officers, on Tuesday, registered a fresh and suo motu case in relation to some objectionable wall graffiti that were noticed within the campus of the Jadavpur University after a ruckus broke out there on March 1 in which two students were injured and hospitalised after being allegedly hit by the vehicle of the West Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu.
The graffiti were pertaining to the controversial claims on “Azad Kashmir” and “Free Palestine”.
Sources aware of the development said that Progressive Democratic Students’ Federation (PDSF), a students’ wing with ultra-left leanings, has claimed credit for those wall graffiti.
However, sources added that the investigating officers are yet to identify the individuals or students who are responsible for creation of those wall graffiti within the university campus.
Therefore, the fresh and suo motu case registered by the city police has been against “unknown” individuals.
However, the city police have issued fresh summons to some students of the university in this connection for the purpose of questioning.
“We have issued fresh summons to those students who had ignored our previous summons on this count,” said a city police official who preferred anonymity.
He also said that investigation is underway also to find out whether the wall graffiti were created to sustain an atmosphere and tussle within the campus.
“Besides these particular wall graffiti, the other political graffiti within the campus are also under the scanner of our investigating officials,” the city police insider said.
The ruckus broke out within the university campus on March 1 when the West Bengal Education Minister’s car was allegedly stopped after it entered the campus, and a scuffle followed.
The students were demanding immediate elections for the university’s students’ council.
The protesting students alleged that while Minister Basu decided to leave the campus due to the protests, his vehicle deliberately hit two protesting students, following which they were severely injured and had to be hospitalised.
Amid the protests, the Minister received minor injuries and fell sick.
He was taken to the state-run S.S.K.M. Medical College and Hospital and was discharged later.
