IMD Issues Red Alert for North India: Cold Day and Dense Fog Expected for Next Five Days

New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert on Friday, indicating that dense to very dense fog conditions are expected to persist over North India for the next five days. Additionally, cold day to severe cold day conditions are likely to continue for the next three days.

The IMD highlighted the presence of “Jet Stream Winds” at 130-140 knots at 12.6 km above mean sea level over the plains of North India. This phenomenon is causing the subsidence of cold air, intensifying cold wave and cold day conditions in the region. The agency predicts a continuation of similar jet stream intensity for the next 3-4 days.

According to the IMD’s bulletin, minimum temperatures range from 2-5 degrees Celsius in isolated pockets of North Rajasthan and South Haryana. Meanwhile, temperatures range from 6-10 degrees Celsius over most parts of Punjab, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, as well as remaining parts of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. Residents in affected areas are advised to stay updated on weather conditions and take necessary precautions to cope with the prolonged cold and dense fog.
