‘Hurricane’ in Russia: Eight dead,10 hospitalised

Moscow: A tragic incident occurred in Russia when a hurricane struck a wild beach near Lake Yalchik, a popular recreational spot for residents of Mari El and neighboring Tatarstan. The incident took place at 6 p.m. local time (1500 GMT) on a Saturday, resulting in seven fatalities and 22 injuries.

The hurricane’s gusty winds knocked down numerous trees, posing a significant threat to the approximately 500 cars and a tent camp present on the beach at the time of the incident. The head of the republic’s civil defense and population protection committee, Alexander Malkin, reported on the incident.

In response to the emergency, rescue teams, the police, and an airborne group from the Russian emergencies ministry were mobilized to assist in the relief and rescue efforts.

Mari El is situated approximately 650 km east of Moscow. The authorities are currently focused on providing support to the affected individuals and managing the aftermath of the natural disaster.
