HM Shah to meet kin of anti-drug activists killed; flays AAP for pushing Punjab into ‘abyss of drugs’

New Delhi, Oct 18 (IANS) Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab of pushing the state into the “abyss of drugs”, resulting in numerous families losing their children, and announced that he would meet the kin of those who recently lost their lives for speaking out against the drug trade.

In a post on his official X account, Home Minister Shah said he would meet the family members of individuals who were killed for raising their voices against drug peddlers thriving under the patronage of the AAP government.

The meetings will be held in Mansa, Sangrur and Gurdaspur on October 20.

“The AAP government has spared no effort in pushing Punjab into the abyss of drugs, as a result of which numerous families have had to lose their children,” Home Minister Shah added.

“I will meet the family members of those individuals who recently lost their lives for raising their voices against the drug peddlers thriving under the patronage of the AAP government, in Mansa, Sangrur, and Gurdaspur on Tuesday (October 20). The grief these families have endured cannot be expressed in words,” he said.

The Home Minister asserted that attempts to suppress voices rising against the dark drug trade would never succeed and that the people of Punjab would deliver a resounding response to it.

Home Minister Shah also said that the Union government would handpick drug peddlers and send them behind bars.

“The Government of India will handpick drug peddlers and send them behind bars, and will continue its efforts until the entire country, including Punjab, is freed from this drug trade,” he added.

The statement comes amid ongoing concerns over the drug menace in Punjab, where several anti-drug activists and individuals who spoke out against the narcotics trade have been killed in recent months.

Home Minister Shah’s planned visits to the three districts are expected to focus on consoling the bereaved families and reiterating the Centre’s commitment to eradicating the drug network.
