Guwahati, Sep 14 (IANS) A man accused of brutally murdering his wife in Guwahati allegedly died after attempting to escape from police custody, police said on Monday.
The accused, Ramanuj Goswami, reportedly jumped from a moving police vehicle while he was being taken to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for a medical examination, officials said.
According to police, Goswami attempted to flee in the Narakasur Hill area by jumping from the vehicle.
He reportedly sustained injuries in the incident and later succumbed.
Goswami was the prime accused in the gruesome murder of his wife, Riya Talukder Goswami, whose severed head was recovered from a refrigerator at their Guwahati residence.
According to police, Goswami allegedly killed Riya following a dispute and later surrendered. Investigators have been examining the circumstances surrounding the murder, including his alleged suspicion that his wife was involved in an extramarital relationship.
Police had earlier said that the accused allegedly had no remorse for the killing and had also threatened to murder a man whom he suspected of having an affair with his wife if he was released from prison.
The latest reported escape attempt has added another twist to the high-profile murder investigation. Details regarding how far Goswami managed to get after jumping from the vehicle, whether he sustained any injuries and how police subsequently brought him under control were not immediately available.
The police are also investigating whether Goswami was under the influence of drugs at the time of the murder and whether he had any history of drug addiction. Forensic and investigative teams have been examining evidence collected from the crime scene, including a sharp dao suspected to have been used in the killing.
Bloodstains and other material evidence were also recovered from the apartment.
Goswami, an Uber driver originally from Gauripur, and Riya, who worked at a boutique in Fancy Bazar, had been married for around six months. The investigation into the murder, as well as the reported escape attempt, is underway.
