Google ‘AI’ working on ‘supercharged Assistant’ powered by LLMs

Google has revealed plans to develop a “supercharged” version of its Assistant, powered by generative AI. In an internal email sent to employees, the tech giant expressed its commitment to creating assistive, conversational technology to enhance users’ lives. The company sees great potential in generative AI to transform the Assistant and aims to explore the possibilities of integrating the latest Large Language Model (LLM) technology.

A portion of the team has already begun working on this ambitious project, starting with the mobile platform. However, as part of this restructuring, Google is eliminating a small number of roles within the team. The company assured that affected employees will receive dedicated support during this transition and will be given a minimum of a 60-day internal search period based on local requirements.

Though the exact number of employees impacted by the layoff is not clear, Google remains committed to supporting those affected and urges their colleagues to offer understanding and support during this challenging time.

Recently, reports emerged that Google was also working on a feature allowing users to utilize Google Assistant to summarize webpages, further enhancing the Assistant’s capabilities.

In June, the tech giant introduced two new voices, Lime and Indigo, for its virtual assistant software application, aiming to promote diversity and provide users with more voice options.

With these developments, Google is poised to take its Assistant to new heights, leveraging generative AI to create a more powerful and versatile conversational tool for millions of users worldwide.
