Fire on Russia’s Nuclear-Powered Container Ship, Sevmorput

Moscow: Authorities have successfully extinguished a fire that broke out on Russia’s nuclear-powered container ship, Sevmorput, with no reported injuries, according to the emergency department of Murmansk region.

The incident occurred in one of the vessel’s cabins, affecting an area of approximately 30 square meters, as reported by Xinhua News Agency. Fortunately, there was no perceived threat to the nuclear plant of the container ship.

Sevmorput holds the distinction of being the world’s sole icebreaking transport ship equipped with a nuclear power plant. Designed to navigate through ice fields up to one meter thick at a speed of about two knots, the vessel continues to play a unique and strategic role in maritime transportation.
