Guwahati, Aug 24 (IANS) Assam Police seized around 2,098 kg of ganja, estimated to be worth Rs 11-12 crore, during a major anti‑narcotics operation in Kokrajhar district, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Monday.
Taking to X, Sarma praised Kokrajhar Police for the seizure and said the contraband was recovered at the Damrapara Checking Point. According to the Chief Minister, the ganja had been concealed beneath bamboo in an attempt to evade detection during transportation. Two persons allegedly involved in transporting the contraband were apprehended during the operation.
Sharing details of the seizure, Sarma wrote: “Raat gayi, baat nahi jaane di,” while appreciating Kokrajhar Police for their action. He estimated the value of the seized ganja at around Rs 11–12 crore, underlining the scale of the consignment and the significance of the operation.
The seizure is part of the Assam government’s continuing crackdown on the trafficking and transportation of narcotic substances through the state. Assam shares international and inter‑state borders and has emerged as an important transit route for the movement of various types of contraband. Authorities have stepped up checking and surveillance at vulnerable points to prevent the transportation of narcotics.
The Damrapara Checking Point operation also highlights the role of police checkpoints in intercepting consignments being moved through the state. Police are expected to investigate the source of the seized contraband, its intended destination, and the wider network allegedly involved in its transportation. The two apprehended accused are likely to be questioned as part of the investigation to establish their links with other persons involved in the alleged drug trafficking network.
Sarma congratulated Kokrajhar Police for the operation and encouraged Assam Police to continue their efforts against narcotics trafficking. “Keep up the good work, Assam Police,” the Chief Minister said in his post.
The Assam government has in recent years maintained a strong focus on its anti‑drug campaign, with police regularly conducting seizures of narcotics and arresting alleged traffickers across districts. Monday’s seizure is among the major narcotics recoveries reported from the state and is expected to provide investigators with leads into the movement of large consignments through Assam. The authorities are continuing their probe into the case.
