Election Commissioner Arun Goel Resigns Ahead of LS Polls

New Delhi: In a surprising development, Election Commissioner Arun Goel has tendered his resignation from his post, just weeks before the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. His resignation was confirmed on Saturday and has been accepted by President Droupadi Murmu.

A gazette notification issued on Saturday, citing Clause (1) of Section 11 of The Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Act, 2023, officially acknowledged the acceptance of Goel’s resignation, effective from March 9, 2024.

Speculation arises regarding Goel’s potential ascension to the role of Chief Election Commissioner, given the impending retirement of the current CEC, Rajiv Kumar, slated for February 2025. However, the reasons behind Goel’s resignation remain undisclosed, sparking curiosity among political circles.
