Veteran Congress leader Vakkom Purushothaman passes away

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala mourns the loss of veteran Congress leader Vakkom Purushothaman, who passed away. A law graduate from Aligarh Muslim University, he embarked on his political journey as a ward member in his panchayat located in the outskirts of the capital city.

Throughout his illustrious career, Purushothaman served as a legislator five times and was elected to the Lok Sabha twice. He held significant positions in the state cabinet, serving as a minister on three separate occasions. Additionally, he served as the Speaker of the Kerala Legislative Assembly twice.

Purushothaman’s dedication and commitment to upholding rules and regulations were evident during his tenure as the Speaker, setting him apart from many of his peers in the party. He later assumed gubernatorial roles in Mizoram, Tripura, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

After stepping down as Governor of Tripura in 2014, he decided to retire from active politics and largely confined himself to his home.

The final rites of the esteemed leader will take place in his home village near Attingal in the outskirts of the capital city on Tuesday.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressed his condolences for the passing of this veteran Congress leader, praising him as an efficient and capable administrator who displayed his caliber effectively in all the roles he held.
