Mumbai, Aug 24 (IANS) The restored version of Anil Kapoor and Manisha Koirala’s romantic entertainer ‘1942: A Love Story’ was re-released in Indian theatres on 21 August 2026.
The latest version of the drama enjoys 8K restoration and Dolby 5.1 surround sound. However, on Monday, the makers revealed that they will only be able to play the movie in some selected theatres across the country, as most of the cinema halls in India support 4K.
Makers Vidhu Vinod Chopra Films dropped a note on their official handle explaining the reason behind their decision.
They wrote, “We have received an overwhelming number of messages over the weekend on how much you have loved the film in cinemas. We restored 1942: A Love Story in 8K resolution and Dolby 5.1 surround sound to bring you the finest big-screen experience, and to ensure that the film will remain beautiful to watch for a long time to come (sic).”
They shared that it took more than two years and over 300 hours of work just to remaster the iconic soundtracks. The makers further revealed that the entire restoration process was performed by more than 150 people over 9000 human hours.
In an attempt to maintain the optimum visual experience, the makers have decided that the film will be shown only in a selected theatres.
Communicating their decision, the note further read, “Even though currently in India, we have only 4K cinemas, the work done by our team is future proof, so audiences can continue to revisit and love this film over & over again. However, we realized that select cinema halls are not technically equipped to project this restoration in its intended glory. Because we refuse to compromise on quality, the film will now play exclusively in handpicked theatres that meet the experience we ideally want to present.”
The post also listed the cinema halls which will be showing the restored version of ‘1942: A Love Story’.
